To
get the best out of your research, try to remember these few 'does'
and 'don'ts':
DO
·
Start off with your own university library, including the library
OPAC and databases such as INSPEC and ANTE
·
If you are a member of a professional institution, try their information
centre next. Many professional institutions have subsidised rates
for student members, which will allow you to use their library.
Take a look at their web-page which will describe their range
of services.
·
Discuss your planned use of information resource centres with
your tutor.
·
Make sure the information centre you plan to use is relevant -
check out their OPAC on the web. It is obvious but - check their
opening hours.
·
If you visit the information centre, then plan the use you intend
to make of your day; remember that the library staff will only
be able to give you limited time and help. Sometimes their databases
may not be available to you because of supplier agreements or
other constraints.
·
If you are writing or telephoning, make sure you have the correct
contact. Use the ASLIB
Directory, or other directories such as the Civil Service
Yearbook or the Directory of British Associations - your university
library will hold copies of these.
·
Some information centres may have to charge you for the use of
their resources. Even if they don't, then remember that information
isn't free - it costs time and effort.
·
Acknowledge the help that you receive, a thank you letter and
a copy of your results are always appreciated.
DON'T:
·
Don't send out blanket or generalised requests for information;
nobody has the time to respond to these.
·
Don't make unreasonable or excessive requests; remember that an
information centre has to give priority to its own clientele.
